Thessaloniki city History As frequently as we visit Thessaloniki, we always feel especially privileged to be in this city, which throughout the centuries has stood as a welcome harbor to refugees and returning Hellenes alike. It is an Ancient city that over the centuries has absorbed the earthquakes of historic changes and has always managed not only to survive but to thrive and to claim its place as the economic, political, religious and social center of the Balkan Peninsula. In this sense, Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia and Northern Greece, is a reflection of world Hellenism, a place of rebirth and ultimate triumph. |

Byzantine Veria During the Byzantine Empire, which succeeded the years of Roman rule, Veria and the greater region of Imathia flourished greatly, and so today there survive religious shrines, churches and monasteries a number of which are almost 1000 years old. The Bema of Apostle Paula More recent monument, the Bema of Apostle Paul, reminds us of the place where the apostle preached to the Nations. |

Pieria prefecture History The imposingcastle of Platamon, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of southern Pieria, welcomes the visitors and prepares him for what he is about to see and experience. The ancient Macedonian kings originally built the city of Iraklion and then fortified the hill with a castle to protect the city and the frontiers of their kingdom. With the passing of time the castle was destroyed but its strategic location prompted the Franks to reconstruct it in the 12th century, when the fortress assumed its current appearance. Ancient places - Dion Built at the foot of Mount Olympus and set in the imposing atmosphere of the dwelling of the gods, Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians, has not ceased to unveil its magnificent history, as new archaeological findings are constantly brought to light. It is in Dion that the Olympians Zeus and the Muses were worshipped, amongst the numerous athletic events and theatrical performances held on the location.. Mount Olympus Mount Olympus (2917m), the tallest mountain in Greece, has become a global symbol of modern European civilization. It was at the summit of this mountain that the ancient Greeks imagined the Olympian gods to dwell. The religion of the twelve Olympians nourished the evolution of the free mind which begat mankind's grand cultural accomplishments. Enveloped in the mists of legend since time immemorial, Olympus enchants the visitor with its awe-inspiring bearing, embracing history and its abundant and varying nature alike. |

Meteora mountains The Monasteries of Meteora One of the most amazing places in Greece, if not the world is Meteora. If you have seen pictures of Greece or spend any time looking through travel brochures then you have certainly been impressed by the monasteries perched on top of enormous rocks and have probably wondered how on earth they built them. The rocks themselves are impressive, rising from the plains of Thessaly a few miles northwest of Kalambaka. The word Meteora means literally 'hovering in the air' and of course brings to mind the word meteor. What created this rare geological phenomenon is one of the mysteries of nature and there are many theories though they remain theories and none have been proven. But as amazing a marvel of nature as these giant rocks are the buildings on the top of these are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places to visit in Greece. |
